When cheeks appear deflated without any kind of shape, a person can look older than his or her years, but cheek augmentation surgery can restore a younger, healthier look.

Overview
Cheek enhancement can be achieved without the use of cheek or mandibular implants, as Dr. Marosan does not use implants to restore facial volume. For patients who wish to avoid surgery and/or are seeking a temporary option, Dr. Marosan will personally inject long-lasting fillers along the cheekbones to enhance their appearance. A longer-lasting alternative is fat transfer, which uses the patient’s own fat to enhance the cheeks, periorbital area, and lips.
Surgical Technique
Cheek augmentation may be performed in conjunction with a facelift by repositioning the patient’s soft tissues over the cheekbones and by using fat grafting techniques. Fat is harvested through a small stab incision at the level of the umbilicus, then processed by washing and centrifugation prior to being injected with a blunt cannula into areas of volume deficiency or deflation.
This procedure may be performed under local anesthesia alone or, when combined with a facelift, under deep intravenous sedation. While a portion of the transferred fat may be reabsorbed by the body over time, the procedure can be repeated. Although fat grafting does not halt the aging process, it provides the longest-lasting results and contributes to overall skin rejuvenation.
Hyaluronic Acid
This is a natural occurring substance within the body and often found in the connective tissue. It is processed as an injectable filler for medical purposes, including cosmetic surgery. The least invasive of all procedures, the filler is injected in deep layers within the mid-face area. While most fillers create beautiful, natural results, the outcome is not permanent. Most fillers will last approximately 6-12 months. Newer fillers like Voluma XC can last up to two years. Usually, it takes up to six syringes (one cc each) to create a beautiful, natural result without any downtime. Dr. Marosan use blunt injection cannula which minimizes tissue trauma or bleeding and the injections are virtually painless. No topical or local anesthesia needed.
Fat Grafting
Another natural substance that can be injected into the mid-face to enhance volume is the patient’s own fat tissues that are harvested from donor sites using liposuction, and then reinjected into the cheeks. This procedure is done under local anesthesia only. Some of the fat can be absorbed by the body over time, but the procedure can be repeated. Although fat injections do not stop aging, they give the longest long term results including skin rejuvenation.
During/After Surgery
Cheek augmentation using fat grafting may be performed as an outpatient procedure with intravenous sedation when combined with a facelift. When performed as a standalone procedure, fat grafting is done using local anesthesia only. The procedure is performed in our accredited surgical facility and typically takes up to one hour to complete.
Bruising, swelling, and numbness are part of the immediate recovery period and usually resolve by the second week. While some initial swelling is expected, results continue to refine as healing progresses. Filler injections do not require anesthesia and involve no downtime.
